Tbilisi Highlights "1"

Holy Trinity Cathedral "Sameba"

The third-tallest Eastern Orthodox Cathedral in the World, located on Elia Hill above the left bank of the River Mtkvari in the historic neighborhood of Avlabari. It is the main Georgian Orthodox Cathedral; constructed between 1995 and 2004 and paid for by anonymous donations from citizens and several wealthy businessmen.

Metekhi

Taking the road up to the rocky outcrop above the Metekhi Bridge. This is where Vakhtang Gorgasali built his palace and the site’s original church, when he made Tbilisi his capital in the 5th century. King David the Builder had a palace and church here too – they were destroyed during the Mongol invasion in 1235. The existing church was built by King Demetri Tavdadebuli (the Self-Sacrificing) between 1278 and 1289, and has been reconstructed many times since. It is thought to be a deliberate copy of King David’s 12th-century church. The tomb of the Christian martyr St Shushanik – tortured by her husband in 544 for refusing to convert to Zoroastrianism. We will also see the 1960s equestrian statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali.

Botanical Garden

The Garden’s history spans more than three centuries. It was first described in 1671 by the French traveler Jean Chardin and is thought to have been founded as a royal garden in 1625. The gardens were pillaged during the Persian invasion of 1795 but restored in the early 19th century and officially established as the Tiflis Botanical Garden in 1845. Occupying 128 hectares with 4500 species of flora from Georgia, Caucasus region, China, the Himalayas, Japan, North America, Turkey, Siberia, the Mediterranean and all around the world. Located in the southern part of Tbilisi in the river Tsavkisis-Tskani gorge between Tabori and Sololaki ridges and on their slopes. There we will see the blooming plants of unusual beauty, the 40 m waterfall and a little bridge grown with amazing flowers across the river that is tumbling through.

Tbilisi Ropeway

Let's enjoy fascinating views of Tbilisi from the fortified glass cabins ropeway, crossing the river up to the mount of Mtatsminda.

Narikala

Also called the mother fortress of Tbilisi, Narikala is an ancient symbol of Tbilisi’s defense. Dominating the Old Town skyline, the fortress was established in the 4th century, around the period when the city itself was founded. It was then known as Shuris-tsikhe "Invidious Fort". The name Narikala is said to derive from a Persian word for citadel, but another theory says was the name that Mongols used, meaning “little fortress”. It was expanded considerably by the Arabs during the 7th and 8th centuries. The Arabs built the Emir’s palace within its walls. King David the Builder further extended the fortress in the 11th century. Most of the existing fortifications date from the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1827 it was damaged by an earthquake and was not resorted. St. Nikolos church, inside the fortress walls, dates from the 12th century. It was renovated in 1996. Narikala offers some of the best panoramas of the city.

Kartvlis Deda

The statue was erected on the top of Sololaki hill in 1958, the year Tbilisi celebrated its 1500th anniversary. Prominent Georgian sculptor Elguja Amashukeli designed the twenty meter aluminum figure of a woman in Georgian national dress. She symbolizes the Georgian national character: in her left hand she holds a bowl of wine to greet those who come as friends; and in her right hand is a sword for those who come as enemies.

Mtskhta & Jvari +Tbilisi Highlights "2"

Mtskheta

Starting by the old capital of eastern Georgian kingdom of Iberia from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD: Mtskheta. Located in Kartly province, circa 30km North-West Tbilisi; by the confluence of the Kura & Aragvi rivers. Mtskheta was the site of Georgia's adoption of Christianity in 334 and remains the headquarters of the Georgian Orthodox Church.

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (Life Giving Pillar)

founded in 1010, built on the site of Georgia's first church, and contains the graves of the ancient Georgian kings, including Sidonia, who was said to have been buried holding Christ's robe.

Samtavro (Place of the Ruler)

located to the north up the main road, within easy walking distance from the Svetitskhoveli complex. According to legend, St. Nino actually lived on this site and prayed within the smaller of its two extant churches. This small church dates from the 4th century. The larger church on this site was built in the 11th century and contains the graves of Mirian, the Georgian king who adopted Christianity, and his wife, Nana

Bebris Tsikhe (The Elder's Fortress)

located further up the main road from Samtavro, the ruins of Bebris Tsikhe are fun, if a bit dangerous, to climb on for views overlooking Mtskheta and the valley formed around the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers.

Jvari (The Cross) Monastery

situated on a cliff above Mtskheta since the 6th century. It is the culmination of a number of artistic and architectural aspiration in early Christian Georgian architecture. The view from above is amazing.
